A Different Perspective
The Goal:
For this assignment we were asked to walk from one point on campus to another, and record our observations along the way. Next, we had to come up with a creative way to present our journey. I decided to do this by turning my observations into a pop-up book.
My story follows a knight on horseback in search of an unknown treasure. All of my pages are based off of what I observed during my actual walk - with a twist.
I started my journey at my University's design building.
I walked across an open lawn area that was under construction at the time. I ended up at the University's library/geological museum, where, upon entering, a massive T-Rex skeleton was on display.
I wandered through the building and eventually found a very old desk. Inside of it were piles of notes left by students over the years. I was delighted by my found "treasure", however upon returning to the desk later that week I discovered that someone had since taken all of the notes (they have now been returned). At first I was disappointed, but I quickly realized that all I had to do was leave a note of my own to restart the cycle.
As a finishing touch, I drew out a simple map of my journey with simplified instructions for the user to look through after their initial journey.
My initial observation documentation of my walk across campus was very text heavy, so for this project I decided to tell a story that relied mainly on visuals. I also chose a largely monochromatic color palette to place emphasis on elements that fell outside of the gray color scheme.
