Celebrating a Community
The Goal
The Winthrop Community Garden, located in Uptown Chicago, celebrates the vibrant history of the Winthrop Avenue neighborhood. The neighborhood is well known for it's tight-knit community and intertwining of cultures. With the help of MKSK, the garden was reimagined into a more dynamic outdoor space for  neighborhood events, markets, gardening, and more.
I created three interpretive panels to tell the rich story of the Winthrop Avenue families and the growth of the neighborhood through time.
Creating the Thread
I chose to focus on the closeness within the neighborhood, building off of the idea of a "tight-knit community." I used thread-like imagery to communicate the weaving-together of a loving, vibrant neighborhood.
It begins with the establishment of the Winthrop neighborhood - created through racially segregated land policies
Despite its origins, the residents quickly formed a tight-knit and resilient community
It grew into a rich network of community and togetherness, spanning generations and across cultures
